before the frost

Photos from a week ago, one of the last wanders through the garden for months to come... that night the frost came, blanketing our foggy valley with ice crystals. We threw calico sheets over the still-growing greens (beets, lettuces, arugula) and they survived. I was stunned at how wet the sheets were when I picked them up the next morning. They felt like I'd just pulled them out of the washer!

  1. Looks good for just a week ago! It's been so cold and wet here I just assume everyone is done with their summer gardens. Have you guys ever done a fall/winter garden?

  2. It was like that here for a week and now it's in the sixties again. I don't know what to think. We tried a fall garden this year- lettuces, onions, beets, brassicas (don't know if those will do well), garlic, etc. I feel like it's tricky cause you have to start fall seeds in the middle of summer!
