it's my birthday, let's finally make farmy pen-pals

bits and pieces of this past week on the farm

*breathtaking sunrises, feeding the chickens the overgrown arugula, organizing the kitchen, mopping the floor for the first time in months (don't judge), eating one of the last duck eggs, moving the fence from the orchard to the field, sheltering the animals from the rain, a misty break in the downpour to do so*

And now, let's get down to business. Almost two months ago now, I proposed the idea of creating some farmy pen-pals. Then the rush of the holiday season set in. I hate that there's a rush, especially when I don't play into the whole mass-consumerism aspect of it. But this year was different. I had things to make for people... most importantly, the cover for Seasoned. It was an invigorating experience, but I'm thankful for this little break in between winter and spring.
I can revisit half-forgotten ideas like the pen-pal thing.

One of you suggested putting our addresses in one place, and another suggested having me pair you up. While I prefer the idea of a free-for-all, I would be worried that someone would not get picked by accident, or that some crappy spam-artist would come and hijack all of your emails and send you messages about sexy ladies and oil prospects in Dubai. So, let's do it this way. If you are interested, send me an email at mckenzieditter at gmail dot com. Include a brief statement about yourself (what are your interests, etc.) and a brief statement about the kind of friend you would like to have. I would like to think that we can all be open minded here, and that if we have some differences we can learn from each other, but I would hate to pair up someone who's vehemently against raising chickens for eating with someone who has a hundred of them. You know what I mean? So be honest with me. Oh, and obviously include your mailing address.

I also want to say that pen-pals don't have to write to each other with great urgency. The internet has done that to us. Even now on Facebook you can see when someone's read your message and you revert to your middle-school-self like, I know you saw it, now why didn't you respond?  Do we really have to be that rushed? No. I hate feeling pressured to write someone back the same day, or even the same month. Truth be told, I usually respond to a letter the same day and get sidetracked halfway through to make dinner, or even worse, seal it up in an envelope and forget to mail it for a month. I know I'm not the only one. I've been making efforts at being better about this, but I still have a letter from two months ago waiting to be responded to. Maybe I'll do that this weekend. ;)

ps. I guess I forgot to say that you do NOT have to be a farmer to want to be a farmy pen-pal. Please don't feel excluded if you're not. I guess it would be good if you have farmy dreams, or read farmy books, or maybe talk to your potted plants or something... (But if you don't like those things, you're probably not reading this blog anyway.) Just wanted to add that. Don't feel left out!

  3. Thank you! And I've gotten emails from SOOOOOO many awesome people. I wanna be selfish and hoard them all as penpals! ;)
